Changing Seasons; Spring of Progress or Autumn of Decay?

The year 2011 brought radical changes to the world. Leaders were faced with global challenges, of which many remain unsolved. Calls for democracy, deviating economic systems and ongoing inequality are more than ever present at the world stage. All over the globe new movements have manifested themselves, many crucial decisions have been taken and many important events have changed the life of millions. But, we can also look back on an era of progress, in which technological advancement has brought us closer together.  Ongoing globalisation calls for increasing international cooperation. Today's problems cannot be solved by a single state alone. Working together and jointly addressing the issues will be the recipe for success. The United Nations is a forum for states to decide on the adequate response to the challenges of the 21th century.

2012 will give us the chance to settle the conflicts of our past and to emphasise the global cooperation needed to do so. Some regard 2012 as year of transition in which the seasons shade off each other. Established powers may decline, while other rise. Spring and Autumn, as seasons of change, are a symbol for old and new. We can look at the nature and get inspired by it. As they say: ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’.
