Then, GrunnMUN is for you! Here, you will get the chance to experience policy-making first hand and improve various skills such as public speaking, negotiating and debating. It is also a valuable opportunity to meet students from different backgrounds and broaden your network.

Previous Experience

All students, regardless of their experience, background or field of study, are welcome to sign up for the TEIMUN conference!

If you have previous experience with participating in MUNs, please let us know in the registration form. This way we can always make sure you are in a council that fits your level and experience. There are councils on all levels so we will always have a place for you!

Council Choice

There will be a number of different councils simulated at GrunnMUN. Each council will be discussing one topic throughout the day that relates back to the conference theme. In your application you can indicate your three preferred councils, and the three countries you would like to represent within those councils. Please make sure you have read through the council information and their topics before you make a decision.

Presenting GrunnMUN 2022 Keynote Speakers

We are honoured to welcome three experts from multiple disciplines and walks of life as our esteemed speakers at the GrunnMUN 2022 conference. Our speakers will present keynote speeches and address delegates at the Opening Ceremony.

Keynote Speaker:
Caecilia Johanna van Peski

Caecilia Johanna van Peski, currently works as a leading Naval Commander in the Royal Netherlands Navy, and is an expert in the fields of Peace and Security, Democratisation and Elections, and Human Rights. Throughout her career, van Peski has worked for numerous (inter-)governmental organisations, including but not limited to, the Netherlands Foreign Office, the United Nations, NATO, the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and has received both national and international recognition for her work – for example, she was named as one of the 100 most influential women in The Netherlands by the Opzij magazine (2010) and is a recipient of the ‘Ambassador for Peace’ Award, given by the Universal Peace Federation (2010). With diverse experiences ranging from the Balkans to South Asia, her work pertains to building inclusive societies through sustainable development, with a particular focus on the 16th Sustainable Development Goal – the Promotion of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – which will also be the topic of her speech at the GrunnMUN 2022 Opening Ceremony.

Keynote Speaker and Master of Ceremony:
Sami Faltas

Sami Faltas is a consultant and trainer on diplomatic negotiation, good governance and Security Sector Reform. He served as a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at Groningen University, and the Director of the Centre for European Security Studies. He teaches negotiation to government officials and students in the Netherlands, Tunisia, the UK and other countries and runs training courses on Security Sector Reform as a freelance expert of the DCAF Centre for Security Sector Governance. Originally from Egypt, he grew up in the Netherlands, studied at Leiden University and was awarded a doctorate in economics by the Free University of Amsterdam.

Special Speaker:
Mayor Koen Schuiling

GrunnMUN is proud to present our special speaker to close the Opening Ceremony – Koen Schuiling. Since September 2019, Mr. Schuiling has held the position of the Mayor of our very own bustling city of Groningen, handling affairs ranging from the political, economic and social, on behalf of the VVD party. Although Mr. Schuiling began his career in Groningen, having completed his studies in Law and Public Administration at our University, he has since gone on to hold important positions in other parts of the country, such as the function of the Mayor of Den Helder. However, in recent years, he has returned to the North to dedicate himself to improving the education sector in Groningen through various positions on the Supervisory Board of Hanze University and the Committee of Recommendation of the Legal Faculty Association Groningen, and is therefore aware of the hurdles students have had to face during the pandemic.
